Cancer Treatment

Cancer Treatment

Cancer occurs when a type of cell in our body starts to grow out of control. Cancer cells are different from normal human cells by the fact that they keep dividing and forming abnormal cells, while normal cells have a regular cycle which ends in the cell's natural death. Another difference between normal and cancer cells is that the cancer cells can invade adjacent tissue, causing the cancer to spread.
Israeli cancer researchers, discovered in the early 50’s, that some types of Cancer can be “trained” to return to normal activity by behaving like normal cells. This has lead Israel to become a pioneer in understanding Cancerigenous behavior and by that, discovering better treatment strategies.

Types of Cancer
There are many types of cancer, more than 100 different types. The types of cancer that are being diagnosed with the greatest frequency are: bladder cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, colon and rectal cancer, endometrial cancer, prostate cancer, renal cell cancer, leukemia, lung cancer, melanoma, non-melanoma skin cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, thyroid cancer. In the United States alone, there are over thirty five thousand new cases of these common types of cancer every year.

Common types of cancer

The most common type of cancer is Melanoma, whereas thyroid cancer being the least common. There are two main types of cancer of the kidney, renal pelvis and parenchyma cancer, the later type including up to eighty five percent of kidney cancer cases.

Leukemia includes different types of cancer such as acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, chronic myelogenous leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and other forms of leukemia.

There are many innovations in the Cancer Treatment field, Israel being a leading country in innovative care, allowing patients to benefit from higher cure rates.

Chemotherapy

There are more than 50 different types of chemotherapy drugs. Chemotherapy is given in some types of cancer and it can be given before or after an operation, together with radiation therapy, in advanced cases of cancer or with bone marrow transplant (BMT).
Combination chemotherapy is the use of several cancer drugs given together, being the most common practice in cancer treatment.

So how does Chemotherapy work? Chemotherapy is the use of cytotoxic drugs. Cytotoxic means toxic to the cells, therefore chemotherapy works by destroying cancer cells. Chemotherapy also destroys our own normal cells, but these will recuperate after the end of chemotherapy.

Most common types of cancer can be treated with chemotherapy. The type of chemotherapy given to each patient depends on several factors:
• Type of cancer
• Location of the tumor
• Degree of spread (metastasis)
• Patient's general health

The treating physician will follow the patient closely and will monitor the progress throughout chemotherapy.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy can be used for many solid tumors like breast or prostate cancer. Radiation therapy can also be used to treat cancers of the blood forming cells like Leukemia.

So, what is Radiation therapy? It is the use of measured doses of ionizing energy. Radiation therapy allows to kill cancer cells and by that, diminishing tumor size.
Even though radiation therapy damages both cancer and normal cells, radiation causes less damage to normal cells than chemotherapy. This is possible due to the beaming of x-rays acting directly on an area of the body pointed by the radiation therapy machine. Radiation therapy causes little damage to the surrounding tissue.

Studies have shown that adding radiation therapy to the chemotherapy improves survival rates in some common types of cancer.

New Cancer Treatment

During this last decade, great improvements have been made in the cancer treatment field, allowing higher rates of cure.
A good example of improvement in cure rates is Leukimia treatment. In Israel, the high remission rates are possible thanks to the discovery, by Israeli scientists, of the survival mechanism of some types of Cancers. This has been of great help in tailoring new cancer treatment. By knowing the survival mechanism, treatments can now be directly pointed to the survival mechanism, causing less harm to our own healthy cells.
Treating Leukemia does not end in Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT). New cancer treatment includes other medical disciplines that give complete support to the cancer patient. Israel leads in this field, giving full support for the leukemia patient.
As well as providing full medical support for the leukemia patient, Israel has innovative, extensively well equipped clinics that provide new cancer treatment in many fields of medical tourism, including the common types of cancer mentioned at the beginning of this article.
Israeli specialized clinics, which include well experienced medical staff in the area of medical tourism, will provide the cancer patient with the best new cancer treatment available and the most professional care.
